This year’s selection ‘Living Coral’ is described by Pantone as ‘an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.’
It is hard to imagine that a single colour could set a tone across industries for 2019, yet Pantone, the purveyor of the universally recognised language of colour have a reach that carries considerable influence. However, the magnitude of trends should be taken with a pinch of salt, in order to create something truly unique and push boundaries we need to look for inspiration from culture, surroundings and importantly our imagination.

The colour itself is bright with pastel undertones – orange, with a hint of pink. It projects a retro feeling, pastel yet neon, the tone is close to a peachy sky sunset tone, or the colour you would imagine coral would be when depicted in a fairytale underwater paradise. It is idealistic and somewhat ironic given the current environmental issues. Perhaps this is an influencing factor in the selection, in order to project a positive message.

Previously, Ultraviolet was selected for 2018 and prior to that, Greenery in 2017. It will be interesting to see once again the impact on the art, design and fashion industries throughout 2019.
