Prototyping & Short Run Packaging

At Far’n’Beyond we develop bespoke, attractive and effective packaging solutions that support clients at every stage of their journey.

Our Prototyping & Short-Run Packaging service is designed for brands that need to explore ideas, validate concepts, and test materials before committing to larger production runs.

This early-stage investment allows us to refine structure, appearance and performance, ensuring packaging works both visually and practically.

Our expert team and production capabilities ensure we can provide valuable guidance without restriction or compromise.

Packaging Development Process

Every successful packaging project starts with understanding the product, how it will be used and the environments it will encounter.

Our development process focuses on establishing accurate dimensions, suitable materials and appropriate structures at an early stage. By investing time in this phase, we can eliminate unnecessary costs later and ensure the final packaging solution performs as intended.

Working closely with our clients, we provide guidance on packaging formats, cutter guides and structural templates, ensuring designs are technically sound and ready for production.

Covering the full spectrum of printing & finishing techniques, we offer an extensive range of specialist production methods to create truly bespoke printed products for the most challenging projects.

Short Run Sampling

Short-run packaging is an essential part of the decision-making process. It allows brands to review packaging in physical form, assess artwork placement and confirm finishes before scaling production.

This approach is particularly valuable for new product launches, campaign activity and brand refreshes where visual impact is critical.

From unprinted mockups and test prints to full pre-press samples, we use a range of digital and lithographic production methods to efficiently produce short runs without compromising quality, giving clients confidence to move forward.

Our in-house Graphic Design team is also on hand, working directly with brands to ensure an attractive, impactful appearance for each completed packaging solution, where required.

Custom Packaging Materials & Structure Testing

Packaging is not just about appearance — it must protect the product and perform in real-world conditions. We assess factors such as product weight, fragility and handling requirements when testing materials and structures.

Where possible, we encourage clients to provide a product sample, enabling us to accurately size the packaging and assess the need for fitments or internal supports, helping us recommend the most appropriate material and print solution for each application.

All prototypes and short-run samples are created with future production in mind. Structures and materials are selected to ensure a smooth transition into larger volumes when required. This approach avoids redesigns and ensures packaging remains consistent as quantities increase.

Bespoke Packaging Frequently Asked Questions
Packaging prototyping allows you to test structure, size, materials, and print finishes before committing to higher-volume production.

By reviewing physical samples, you can confirm fit, appearance and performance, reducing the risk of costly changes later in the production process.

Prototyping also ensures packaging is suitable for handling, storage and distribution, helping projects progress smoothly into full production.
Where possible, prototypes and short-run samples are produced using the same or comparable materials intended for full production.

This allows you to accurately assess how the packaging will look and perform at scale. In some cases, alternative materials may be recommended during prototyping to optimise cost or lead time, while still providing a reliable indication of the final result.
Short-run packaging is ideal for quantities ranging from small sample batches through to a few hundred units, depending on the structure and materials required.

This approach is commonly used for product launches, campaign trials, limited editions and early-stage brands. Short runs allow you to test and refine packaging without committing to large volumes.
Final artwork is not always required during prototyping. Many projects begin with white samples to test structure and fit before artwork is applied. Where artwork is available, printed prototypes can be produced to review colour, finishes and overall presentation.

Our team can also support with artwork refinement and template creation as part of the prototyping process.
