Far’n’Beyond is proud to support the Packaging Professional students at Sheffield Hallam as they present their ‘Packaging the Future: From Linear to Circular’ exhibition.
Taking products and packaging that often end in landfills after a single use, the topic required the students to look at alternative materials, processes and initiatives to change the existing journey to a more sustainable and circular solution.
The highlight for us was watching our packaging apprentice Sam present alongside Patrick their proposal to reduce the waste generated by damaged and old DVD and Game packaging, which their research showed was rarely recycled by users and stores.
Other presentations from the degree cohort covered methods of reducing food waste during transport for food delivery companies and alternative methods of distributing bottled water.
Providing a fascinating and in-depth insight into the challenges faced in each scenario, they then answered questions from industry professionals at the event.
The exhibition also showcased each of the students and the projects they have completed at the University.
The course is the only undergraduate degree in England dedicated to packaging, and it is great to see the next generation of packaging experts leading the way in this fabulous industry.
For the exhibition, we assisted with the design and print of various components, including the presentation boards, which we produced on a specialist 100% recyclable cardboard material, in contrast to the standard PVC often used in these scenarios.
In line with the topics covered, the rigid board is made from sustainable and recycled paper and card without compromising on the finish of the print surface whilst also being suitable for disposal through paper and card recycling channels.
It was great to have so much support from the course leaders, cohort and Far'n'Beyond at the exhibition.
Although nerve-wracking, working on the project and exhibition with other industry professionals across different sectors was a privilege.

Sam worked closely with his peers to develop a sustainable and attractive display that allowed each student to display their experience across the two-day exhibition.
As we look to the future of packaging and innovation in the industry, it is great to see practical alternatives being utilised to help reduce our impact on the environment and the realities and challenges of switching from a linear to a circular approach.
