Logo Competition for Local School

School Logo Design

At Far’n’Beyond, we do all we can to support community projects and engage children in the world of design, print, digital and the environment through a variety of campaigns. So we were delighted when a nearby school got in touch to ask us to help their pupils choose a new logo, using a shortlist of the children's own designs.

The Design Process

York, village-based, Appleton Roebuck Primary School approached us asking for help developing new school logos. The pupils had entered a ‘design a new school logo’ competition, and their brilliant designs had been put to the Junior Leadership Team (the school council) for a final vote, creating a shortlist of five.

Each of the final five designs showed clear design flair with a different way of showcasing the school’s name and heritage. Headteacher Martyn Broom asked our team to create mock-up logos of two or three of the shortlist for the children to see what the designs would look like in print. From there, they’d choose one and pick a winner. Mr Broom sent us the photos of the children’s creations to use as inspiration, and we set to work.

Adapting Designs & Giving Feedback

With a set of five impressive logo designs to choose from, it was hard to pick just three. We also wanted to help the children to learn about the design, print and digital potential of logo design so, with Mr Broom’s approval, our team edited a selection from the shortlist.

Our designer did some work on each design, making a few tweaks to the children’s creations. Naturally, the most important part of this process was for the pupils to understand why the changes had been made, so we sent them full notes to explain what was different – and why.

This included details such as how a certain change would mean the logo could be applied more easily to a school jumper, and how adjusting a typeface improves the connection between font and image for a stronger overall organisation identity.

We loved the message behind the logo and how it developed the school's previous icon.

Using the antlers of the Roebuck to create a heart is a really clever idea. We also added a stalk and leaf for a little bit of detail.

Everyone agrees, that these little apples are adorable and really demonstrate the magic of learning.

A fabulous badge using the apple tree to convey the nurturing aspect of the schools values , it includes the key elements of the school name, which we brought together and added a little detail.

We also created a logo that was a mixture of all the submissions (which was actually the one the children chose to represent their school). The final logo has now been developed so it can be easily applied in print and digital, and will be rolled out across the school over the next academic year.

We were so pleased to be able to help the pupils of Appleton Roebuck Primary School develop their new logo. Every entry and each logo designed did the pupils proud and we’re really thankful to Mr Broom for allowing us to play a small part in developing the school’s identity.

"I’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone for your work on this. It’s been brilliant to get the children involved in a process that not only teaches them about logo design and development but gives them the chance to have a huge say in the representation of their school."
